Thursday, 24 July 2025 marked a transformative moment for the students and teachers of St. George’s Anglican Basic School in Chorkor. A daily struggle for clean water has now become a milestone of hope and progress, as PwC Ghana, in partnership with United Way Ghana, officially commissioned a newly constructed mechanised borehole for the school.
For years, pupils had to carry jerrycans from distant water sources just to have enough water for the school day—a routine that not only disrupted lessons but also posed serious health risks. This new borehole does far more than bring water closer; it restores valuable time for learning, improves sanitation, reduces the spread of waterborne diseases, and preserves the dignity of both students and staff alike.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, headmistress Gifty Hlovor acknowledged that water remains a significant challenge in many communities across Accra. She expressed heartfelt gratitude for the timely intervention, stating, “We celebrate a significant milestone in addressing this urgent need, thanks to the generous support of PwC Ghana and United Way Ghana.”
The commissioning ceremony brought together key leaders and community representatives, including the PwC Ghana team led by Clara Amarteifio-Taylor, Corporate Responsibility Leader; the United Way Ghana team led by Faustina Abbey; Mr. Joseph Nii Ayi Ayittey, Circuit Supervisor for the Education District; and delegates from the Anglican Education Department—Rev. Regina N. A. Glover Addo and Ordainer Enoch Nii Ansah Buxton. Their collaboration highlighted the power of cross-sector partnerships in driving sustainable, positive change.
Corporate Responsibility Leader Clara Amarteifio-Taylor reaffirmed PwC Ghana’s unwavering dedication to addressing critical societal challenges. “This project embodies our deep and ongoing commitment to creating meaningful impact. We thank United Way for bringing this pressing issue to our attention and revealing the profound difference we could make here.”
She further shared PwC’s long-term vision for continued engagement with the school. “We look forward to working closely with you on future initiatives, including conversations around the environment, sustainability and sanitation.”
As St. George’s Anglican Basic School embarks on this new chapter, the borehole stands as a powerful symbol of possibility—a testament to what can be achieved when communities, organisations and partners unite with a shared vision to transform lives for the better.
