PwC and AWS - International Supercomputing Conference 2024

Quantum computers have long stopped being merely a topic of research. In recent years, industry and politics have paid ever-closer attention to this ground-breaking technology. Leading technology companies, research institutions and startups are investing billions in this disruptive technology. The new computing generation is based on the laws of quantum mechanics and far surpasses conventional supercomputers in many application areas. The very first use cases can be tested on simulators and quantum computers thanks to cloud-based access.

PwC and AWS: Leading the Future of Quantum Computing

Advances in cloud infrastructurehigh-performance computing (HPC), and quantum computing (QC) are transforming how we approach complex problems across industries. PwC and AWS partnered to develop solutions in advanced computing, optimizing cloud processes and accelerating research in quantum computing, bridging the gap between academia and industry. Together with AWS, PwC is positioned at the forefront of scientific and industrial innovation, addressing critical challenges and unlocking solutions for the future in machine learning, optimization, and simulation.

Main Activities

Research and Academic Collaborations

Research and Academic Collaborations: PwC is actively involved in a quantum computing research and development project funded by the nextgenerationEU european program and managed by Politecnico di Milano. This project brings together experts across disciplines to develop advanced solutions in complex industrial processes. Through collaboration and synergies with universities and companies, PwC wants to build an integrated ecosystem that promotes high-tech innovation for the industry.

Participation in Conferences and International Networking

The PwC QC team has been hosted by AWS at the International Supercomputing Conference 2024 (SC24) in Atlanta. This event gathered industry leaders, researchers, and developers, providing PwC the opportunity to showcase its vision and achievements on quantum computing applied to real use cases. This was a nice occasion to foster exchange of ideas and open doors for global collaborations.

Our Practical Applications and Use Cases

Financial institutions need to classify borrowers by creditworthiness to set lending terms, minimize risk exposure, and meet regulatory requirements. Incorrect classifications can lead to significant financial losses.

Simulating stress scenarios helps banks and financial firms ensure they have enough liquid assets to cover liabilities, especially during economic downturns. Failing to maintain liquidity can lead to insolvency.

Achieving an optimal balance between returns and risk requires complex modeling to decide how and when to rebalance the portfolio, factoring in shifting economic conditions, asset correlations, and investor goals.

Accurately price assets and determine the optimal mix of assets in a portfolio to meet specific financial objectives.

Accurate forecasting helps insurers manage cash flow, adjust product pricing, and mitigate the risk of sudden liquidity demands if many policyholders redeem policies at once.

Efficiently manage an organization’s cash flow to ensure that liquidity needs are met while maximizing investment returns on idle cash. Ineffective cash management can result in missed investment opportunities, inability to meet obligations, and lower overall profitability.

Energy markets are volatile, and organizations need to account for these fluctuations in financial audits to assess their impact on operational costs, revenue, and financial stability accurately.
