PwC’s Exchange: Responsible Technology

With great data comes great responsibility

October 12-15, 2019 | The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, Truckee, CA

A big issue on the minds of executives and board directors is the issue of trust and technology. Consider this paradox: 88% of consumers say their willingness to share personal information depends on how much they trust a given company — but only 25% of consumers believe that most companies handle their private data responsibly. At the same time, the pressure on companies to monetize data has never been greater — 86% of senior executives believe they are in a race with competitors to extract value from data according to recent PwC research.

What does it mean to practice “responsible technology” — using technologies in a way that gives deep thought to data governance, AI bias, and workforce displacement? What does it take to safeguard employee and customer data, as well as intellectual property? How can we stay ahead of, and comply with, increasing and differing privacy regulations? These are no longer questions solely for technology executives or “tech companies” — they are front and center for business unit leaders, the Chief Operating Officer, the CEO and the Board.

At this Exchange, we will discuss the value of exercising responsible technology —indeed, customers and investors increasingly expect it, the risks are great, and companies that fail to take a leadership role will have the expectations defined for them. We’ll examine the ethics, the actions you can take around data governance, cyber, and regulations, and examples of firms who are using technology responsibly in different ways — to reskill their workforce, to improve accuracy and efficiency and to enhance the client experience. Most importantly, we’ll discuss how approaches to solve these issues increasingly require a collaborative, cross-functional approach.
