The December 2016 WP 243, Guidelines on Data Protection Officers (DPOs)—issued by the European Union Article 29 Working Party—removed any remaining doubt from US multinationals’ minds that the selection of a European DPO looms as one of their most important General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) decisions. The guidelines have crystallized five main aspects of that decision.
