Top health industry issues of 2018: A year of resilience amid uncertainty

Top health industry issues of 2018: A year of resilience amid uncertainty

In year two of the Trump administration, healthcare leaders will be adjusting their strategies to focus on investments, collaborations and efficiencies that build enterprise resilience on a baseline of continued uncertainty. Healthcare players, including the White House, Congress, state lawmakers, industry groups and patient advocates, will continue to parry, feint and thrust, which will likely result in additional policy changes. Healthcare providers and insurers in particular should anticipate the changes as they come. Beyond health reform, additional risks and uncertainties are moving to center stage, as is the consumer, and the health industry is being forced to act.

US LCR disclosures: More questions than answers

US LCR disclosures: More questions than answers

As of September 30, 2017, the eight US Global Systemically Important Banks (G-SIBs) have disclosed two quarters of quantitative and qualitative information about their Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) calculations. The quarterly disclosures are intended to provide greater transparency into the banks’ liquidity positions, and while they highlight noteworthy differences in the components of HQLA and net cash outflows among the US G-SIBs, the information raises more questions than it answers. We expect, however, to develop a more granular understanding of their liquidity profiles over future disclosure periods. This A closer look analyzes the US G-SIBs’ LCR disclosures in terms of a) asset mix, b) outflow profiles, c) retail and commercial deposit characteristics, and d) what’s next.

Lighting up Brazil: Scouting business opportunities in a changing geopolitical landscape

Brazilian President Michel Temer and his team have managed to follow through on key policy reforms since Temer assumed office. The focus has been to reduce the gross public debt, and to inject fiscal responsibility into the government. The Brazilian Senate passed a constitutional amendment for a spending cap, effectively placing a floor on government spending. In another reform, the government recently set lending rates to state development bank BNDES at a market rate, which is likely to further reduce gross public debt.

Health reform 3.0: Thriving in a permanent state of policy disruption

The death of health reform has been greatly exaggerated. Though Congress was unable to pass a comprehensive national health reform bill in 2017, many other reforms are playing out in Congress, regulatory agencies and state capitals that could profoundly impact the healthcare landscape over the next year and beyond. Payers, providers, life sciences companies and employers no longer have just one high-profile reform effort to monitor, but dozens. There are several that require their immediate attention.
