US health services deals insights: Q3 2017

For the twelfth quarter in a row, the US health services industry witnessed over 200 deals

However, deal volumes and values declined compared to prior year and quarter. The only sub-sectors that grew in both quarterly and annual terms, by volume, were Behavioral Care and Managed Care. In value terms, the only sub-sector that grew over prior year was other services.

Decrease in megadeal value and volume in Q3

In Q3 2017, there were six announced megadeals, valued at $11.4 billion. In volume terms, the quarter exceeded the Q1 2015 – Q1 2017 average of four megadeals (exceeding $1.0 billion) per quarter. However, since Q2 2017 was also exceptional, with 10 megadeals valued at $43.3 billion, Q3 2017 witnessed a decline in both volume and value terms over the prior quarter. In addition, megadeal value declined 24.3% over Q3 2016.
