Tell us about one of the problems you are trying to help solve for clients?

After the financial crisis, the Federal Reserve requires a Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR) of each bank every year. We help to validate their models that they submit to the Federal Reserve to ensure that they have enough capital on hand in case there is another financial crisis or time of stress. We use SAS (Statistical Analysis System) to evaluate and test their models and look for any key risks.

How does the work you are doing utilize your STEM skills?

I have been using skills specifically from my Statistics degree every day on the job. Being knowledgeable in Calculus and Programming has been extremely helpful.

How was this type of work done previously without STEM (or data analytics) skill sets?

Without data analytics, this job would probably be impossible because a lot of the knowledge and experience is expected within this group. Everyone in the group has a specific data analytics background.

What have you learned from your experiences?

I've learned that there is always room for improvement and growth. I've also learned how to collaborate and work with teams to get to a better solution for the client.

What skills would set students apart?

I think analytical skills definitely set students apart. In this rapidly growing industry, big data has started to play such a big role. If you have the skills to work with big data, you are very marketable in the industry.
