Director, Risk Assurance
Joe started his career in Philadelphia’s Risk Assurance practice and transferred the following year to Detroit’s Risk Assurance practice. Joe has stayed in Detroit’s Risk Assurance group and is currently a Director at the firm.
Q: What's your best career advice?
A: Push yourself to not be afraid of being a little bit uncomfortable. Usually if you feel too comfortable you are not challenging yourself. A little anxiety, uncertainty, and a little bit of discomfort in any business situation usually means you are pushing yourself toward something special.
Q: What experiences had the biggest impact on your career development?
A: Working in Philadelphia my first year at the firm was a great experience. Getting out and experiencing a different city and environment was critical to shaping my perspectives both personally and professionally. I still stay in contact with many of the people from PwC that I met while in Philadelphia, and although our careers have taken place in different parts of the US, it is amazing to see just how similar the paths have been for many of those colleagues. I think that mobility with the firm is one of its greatest assets, because at PwC your career experiences allow you to grow your own way. You may have opportunities to try another adventure and have multiple careers, within a career.
Q: How have professional relationships influenced your career at PwC?
A: The best thing about PwC, is that I feel like I have had multiple people in my career serve as my informal coach at any given time. When you are at the firm for an extended period of time, working on multiple projects, you interact with a lot of our professionals and client contacts. Over that time I developed many strong relationships with a lot of people I look to as coaches, mentors and friends. I leverage that network often, and I truly believe it is those relationships that have kept me enthusiastic throughout my career.
