For many years, Roderick “Rick” M. Danao has become a pillar of the global standard that is the Isla Lipana & Co. leadership. He and his co-partners have taken the firm from one milestone to another and are now set to stir the partnership into new heights.
History tells us that people who have achieved great things come from humble beginnings. A dutiful son of a farmer, the young Rick diligently helped his father and grandfather in their trade and livelihood back in Cagayan. While valuing his roots, he also aspired for the best that the world can offer, and as he is today, Rick always aimed for progress.
Armed with a notable aptitude for numbers, Rick pursued Accountancy as his chosen career. Although he struggled at first, he was able to get into his stride and with an ignited passion for the field, Rick eventually developed a personal brand of discipline that defined his academic and professional work ethic.
Accountancy, like any other field of expertise, Rick says, is mastery through practice. The fundamental knowledge of the principle and its effective application is the key to proficiency.
And proficient he became. Rick was a consistent National Accounting Quiz Bee podium finisher and a recipient of the Joaquin Cunanan Award during his college days at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. Upon graduating and passing the board, Rick earned a ticket to become an auditor in the then Joaquin Cunanan & Co.
As an auditor, Rick felt much excitement towards his new work environment and with his then ‘do-it-all’ attitude, the ever-looming pressure to deliver. Through coaching and self-reexamination, Rick learned to adapt to the demands of the profession and embraced a more positive and collaborative attitude. Rick’s passion for improvement earned him a secondment in the U.S. when he was a manager, becoming one of the first Filipino managers to do so on a long-term basis. Though the attitude and skill-levels of the people he encountered are quite similar to his more familiar local setting, Rick noted the bigger scope and vast environment abroad. This led him to establish productive affiliations, coaching and learnings that formed his view of the field on a global scale.
“We must seek to not just serve our clients but build a great business, one that is consistently growing and multiplying its results.”
As a partner, Rick seeks to expand the firm’s reach in the domestic market. He strives to achieve this by strengthening relationships with local business groups and increasing interactions in key local industries.
Rick considers the firm’s people as the ultimate driving force for growth. Thus, he wants to instill in them the entrepreneurial mentality in fulfilling their assurance/advisory roles.
At the service front, he wants to further develop a system that creates efficiencies and strategies that champion innovation. These, he says, is achievable through meaningful collaborations with the clients.
“Being a professional entails not only fulfilling responsibilities at work but also being able to spend the much needed moments with our family, indulge in other interests and hobbies and help the community.”
Despite new responsibilities as Philippine Territory Assurance Practice Leader and Markets Partner-in-charge, Rick still finds time to enjoy regular trips to the mall and weekend outings with his wife and kids, listen to the old standards, and play basketball with friends and family. Rick is active in the Rotary Club of Parañaque which conducts free surgeries to repair cleft palate and treat hydrocephalus, feeding programs in sponsored communities, and adopt-a-school projects.
