Alumni profile: Lee Longa

December 2013

Lee’s career in the firm started with an interesting coincidence. After graduating from one of the top universities in Davao, he applied for an associate position with the firm, formerly known as Joaquin Cunanan & Co. Though he did not make it when he first applied in the firm, Lee was not deterred and still pursued his application by submitting his resume for the second time. An honest mistake led him to be invited to the session welcoming the top placers. He was hired as an associate in 1996.

In his first year, Lee was assigned to the engagement group handling difficult accounts. The challenges he experienced increased his drive to learn more and improve his skills. Recognizing the value as a strong foundation in the audit practice, he practiced his bookkeeping skills in the firm’s Davao branch then, where he spent almost a year to further hone his skills. He came back to Manila confident and ready to face more challenging roles.

Lee’s hard work paid off when the then Assurance Managing Partner and former Chairman and Senior Partner, Judith Lopez, took note of his quality work and assigned him to the group handling all major insurance clients. In time, Lee was recognized as an expert in the Insurance industry. To further strengthen his expertise, he was sent overseas to attend trainings.

He left the firm as Audit Manager in 2001 to pursue his career in the Insurance industry. Lee is now the CFO of Pru Life UK - one the country’s top insurance companies. He helped create many innovative products and services in the insurance industry. He is also an advocate in improving the insurance practice. Recently, he worked with his CSR team to launch CHA- CHING-an animated tutorial, to help public grade school students in Asia learn smart money values. The project was a success. Top private schools have expressed their intent to adopt the project in their curriculum.

Lee is also the Chairman of Finance and Investment Committee of Philippine Life Insurance Association in 2012 and 2013. He initiated to change the local insurance accounting practices to international standards.

Lee currently is under the 2- year London based executive study program. He joins a selected few to represent their respective companies from different parts of the world. He shared how amazing and humbling the experience had been.

For some R&R, Lee plays golf and badminton. He and wife Gigie like to spend time playing with their one-year old daughter Sam.
