Alumni profile: Jose Morales, III

Karen Joyce Ang Consulting Associate, PwC Philippines September 2014

Jose “Joey” Morales III has successfully established his place in the banking industry, but this feat, he said, was partly because of his brief stint in PwC.

Among his treasured jobs before he became Maybank Philippines’ Senior Vice President and Head of Internal Audit, was as director in the Advisory group of PwC Philippines. Joey joined the firm in 2005 bringing with him his technical skills and significant experience in local banking from his previous employments.

“I owe a lot to Rose Javier (Consulting Managing Partner) because when she offered me to join PwC as head of Financial Services in Advisory, it opened up opportunities for me. I gained a lot from my trainings overseas and to be honest, my market value has doubled."

In the firm, Joey gained more exposure in the banking industry. “I was used to handling local banks, but when I joined PwC,I worked with multinational companies.

It was really a culture shock for me when I joined PwC, but in a good sense. The firm opened up a wider horizon for me,” he said.

An engagement he handled in the firm was to offer Basel II diagnostics to some of the country’s biggest multinational banks and assess their preparedness to adhere to international banking standards’ capital adequacy requirements.

Joey’s technical proficiency was recognized by GE Money Bank, a multinational bank, which hired him as Chief Audit Executive of their newly acquired Keppel Bank. Through his experience in local banks and familiarity with the methodologies of foreign banks, he was able to incorporate the bank’s structure to the local setting. This move propelled his team to recognition.

In his post as audit chief, Joey led the Philippines to be the Best Audit Team among GE Money Bank offices worldwide.

Now in his third year with the Philippine office of Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank)— considered the largest bank in Malaysia, Joey continues to expand his expertise while keeping the values and skills he has learned from his former employments. The methodology, framework and tools and reporting style, he introduced to his local team, are now being adopted by other international offices of Maybank.

Joey is happily married to wife Vera Victoria. The couple is blessed with three lovely daughters: Anna Camille, Tricia Margarita and Angelica Mae.

Despite his busy schedule, Joey finds time to keep fit. He plays golf and tennis in his free time.
