A call was all it took to convince Jose Marie “JM” Pabiton to join PwC Philippines. JM was first introduced to the firm during an open house event. What really swayed him to start a career with the firm was receiving a congratulatory phone call from the office, lauding his achievement for passing the Certified Public Accountant licensure exam. He received the call on the same day the results were released. “For a fresh grad, you feel the sincerity when people call to celebrate with you,” he shares.
JM joined the firm in 2000 as an auditor. Among his first tasks was going down to the basement to physically search for financial statements. The important takeaway in the experience, he said, was that in order to excel in the profession, one should learn by starting from the basics no matter how humbling the task. The experience also allowed him to get familiar with the structure of audit.
JM appreciated the constructive comments he received from his seniors that further enriched his output. This, along with other factors, allowed him to establish his own brand.
“For you to be successful, you have to be careful with the brand that you project,” he noted. It also helps to be familiar with your support staff. JM left the firm after three years to pursue a master’s degree at the De La Salle University- Manila.
Succeeding jobs strengthened his skills not just in banking and finance, but also in managing people. From being a general accountant at Chevron Philippines, he was hired as vice president for Fee Based (Asset Management) Workstream of Deutsche Bank. He was eventually offered a Risk Reporting Head position at the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd.
Now in his third year with the multinational bank, JM continues to expand his expertise in banking services and is now leading the Finance Professional Services group. Among his current projects is expanding his group to meet the demands of growing services.
Newlyweds JM and wife Yna tied the knot on September 2014. JM also enjoys the adrenaline rush that comes with speed.
Aside from his regular job, JM also enjoys teaching aspiring accountants. He holds finance and basic accounting classes at Enderun Colleges at Taguig City. He is occasionally invited as a guest speaker in career talks.
Despite his hectic schedule, JM finds time to engage into sports, such as boxing and motor bike racing.
