Principal and Leader, WNTS Tax Policy Services

Mr. Kumar is a principal and leader of PwC’s Tax Policy Services practice within the Washington National Tax Services practice. In his role, Mr. Kumar advises clients on all aspects of domestic policy including tax policy. His insights and knowledge enable companies to assess critical policy issues more effectively and develop legislative strategies to address those issues from both a technical and political perspective.

Prior to joining PwC, Mr. Kumar served as the Domestic Policy Director and Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell.

He served 11 consecutive years in the Office of the Republican Leader for three different senators, having previously been Director of Policy and Senior Counsel to Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist and Senior Policy Advisor and General Counsel for Senate GOP Leader, Trent Lott. In all of these roles, Mr. Kumar worked in close collaboration with Senate leaders in developing and implementing all aspects of domestic policy including tax, trade, budget, and health care. Mr. Kumar also held positions in the Office of Senator Phil Gramm as Legislative Director and Chief Counsel, the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs as Deputy Chief Republican Counsel and clerked in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Mr. Kumar has been named in Roll Call as one of the fifty most influential staffers for mastery of policy and procedure and access to decision makers at key times. He was described in the Washington Post publication Who Runs Gov as, “an expert in both politics and policy” and also listed in the Almanac of the Unelected as an expert in tax, trade, banking/financial services and immigration.

Mr. Kumar received his J.D. from the University of Virginia. He graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. from Duke University.

US Alternative Asset Management Leader

Mike Greenstein is the U.S. Alternative Asset Management Leader in PwC's Asset & Wealth Management practice. Mike serves as the engagement partner and business advisor to alternative asset management firms and funds of all kinds, including hedge funds, credit funds, private equity funds, fund-of-funds, endowments and others.

Mike brings over 25 years of experience serving many of the Firm's most complex alternative clients, ranging from emerging managers to multi-national, multi-billion dollar firms, many of which maintain complex structures and employ complex investing strategies.

Mike adds value to his clients and the industry by combining his deep industry knowledge, commitment, and leadership, with a collaborative style and a practical approach. He is a frequent commentator in the media on industry issues, trends and developments and a major contributor to industry thought leadership and conferences.

Mike received a BS in Accounting, Magna Cum Laude, from Binghamton University and a Masters in Business Administration from Columbia Business School.

As a leader within PwC, Mike is also actively engaged in HeForShe, a United Nations’ initiative to promote gender equality around the world and in the workplace.


Barry Knee

Assurance Partner, New York

Barry is an asset management partner leading our alternative investments assurance practice in New York.  Barry has 26 years of experience in the investment management industry working with alternative asset management products including hedge funds, private equity funds, registered funds, and funds of funds.  Barry has dealt with complex issues surrounding valuation of various asset classes, complex performance fees, revenue stream valuation, fund mergers, multi-class structures, master-feeder structures, complex share class reorganizations and equalization.  Barry has assisted clients with their hedge fund due diligence programs and has served as a Trustee on PwC’s pension plans performing due diligence in that role.  Barry has instructed various levels of personnel within PwC and externally on hedge funds, mutual funds, collateralized debt obligations and private equity investments as well as facilitating several current development update courses for our asset management clients.

Barry is a CPA and graduate of the University of Michigan. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and is licensed by the state of New York.


Andrew Thorne

Assurance Partner, Boston

Andrew is an assurance partner in the Asset Management Practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Boston office. Andrew has significant experience with a wide range of Alternative Asset managers on issues impacting both the Advisor’s corporate entities and the funds. His clients include private equity, venture capital, hedge funds, funds-of-funds, distressed debt funds, CLOs and regulated investment companies (domestic and foreign). As the Assurance liaison to PwC’s Regulatory Advisory practice Andrew also has significant experience advising clients on regulatory and compliance matters impacting their business. Andrew is also an active member of PwC’s Professional Development Program and frequently develops and delivers presentations to both internal and external audiences on a wide range of asset management topics including the valuation of complex securities and the impact of regulation on the Asset Management business. Andrew is also a contributor to firm publications and has written articles on several related Asset Management subjects.

In addition, Andrew is a member of the Massachusetts society of CPA’s and fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, London, England.

Mike is a Partner based in the Jersey office and the leader of the asset management practice across the Channel Islands. He has worked for PwC since 1997, becoming an engagement leader in 2008, during which time he has worked with a wide portfolio of asset management clients based in Europe and further afield.

His specialist knowledge, absolute commitment and contribution to PwC’s global asset management practice, coupled with his extensive connections and his ability to foster dynamic, collaborative relationships are invaluable in supporting clients, both locally and further afield.

Mike is PwC’s EMEA Alternatives Leader, a member of PwC Global Alternatives Leadership Team and is the Chair of the Jersey Funds Association, the industry body representing the Island’s asset management industry.

Carlyon Knight-Evans is an Asset and Wealth Management Partner at PwC.  He has more than 25 years of experience serving clients in the asset management industry, the first 11 years were spent in the UK and for the last 18 years he has been based in Hong Kong.

In addition to providing assurance services to the asset management industry, Carlyon also has extensive experience in advising asset servicers and asset management firms on operational effectiveness, best practices in areas of corporate governance and internal controls, fund start-ups, and regulatory and compliance work.  He services clients across the various sub-sectors of the industry, including administrators, custodians, trustees, hedge funds, private equity, real estate and traditional asset managers.
