Guy took part in our Summer Internship and tells us about his experience.

Studying: BSc (Hons) Biology

Why did you decide to apply for the PwC Summer Internship?

Having completed my penultimate year at university, looking into my career options post graduation is crucial. Having seen that PwC accepts graduates from all degree backgrounds I thought the internship presented a great way to find out if a career in this field would be suited to me, while also gaining valuable experience in areas outside of my degree course.

With PwC also being a “Big 4” firm, I knew the placement would hold a strong reputation, providing me with quality, transferable skills from the training I would receive and work I would carry out.

You’ve spent your time across all service lines of the business, what types of work have you experienced?

My first morning was spent learning about the firm and receiving training in company policies/regulations. This was all valuable as I was immediately launched into tasks with the audit team I was working with, who were preparing the a Q2 audit.

I spent 2 weeks working with the audit team where tasks I performed included: drafting audit documentation, preparing files, as well as casting on the client’s financial accounts. Coming with a scientific background, it’s natural for me to be analytical and query potential errors. I found that these skills I’ve developed from my degree were actually very transferable and could easily be used in many of the tasks I was given.

In my final week I moved around the other departments of the office (Advisory, Tax, Actuarial). Although my time in these departments was brief, I still gained enough experience to leave with an understanding of what tasks they perform, respectively.

What has your overall PwC experience been like?

It’s been amazing! I was a little apprehensive as I had no financial background, but I needn’t have worried - help was always available and questions were welcomed. On a whole in the office, everyone has been really friendly and made me feel welcome in the office.

In my 2 weeks the audit team I was working with were great - really helpful and gave me an excellent insight to the work that goes on there. Performing work that the team would actually be using in their report gave me value for the tasks I was completing, and seeing my name on the author list was really rewarding.

I’ve really been made to feel part of the team and also enjoyed a couple of team lunches which have been great at providing some social downtime while also finding out more about the studying involved from students across different stages of the 3 year qualification programme.

Looking back on your time at PwC, what has been your biggest learning?

I’ve got to say everything! The placement provides full involvement within the firm from the first day so my ability to adapt to unfamiliar situations and learn on the job has increased significantly.

I’ve really enjoyed my placement at PwC and I’m looking forward to applying the skills I’ve developed in my final year at university. I’d like to thank PwC Isle of Man for giving me a place on their summer internship programme, it’s been a fantastic opportunity that I would recommend to anyone wanting to investigate career options following graduation.
