Bisnis, Jakarta – Indonesia needs to expedite cooperation in the logistics sector to boost national logistics performance, which declined at the start of the year.
An economist from the Institute for Economic and Social Research (LPEM) of the Faculty of Economics and Business of Universitas Indonesia, Teuku Riefky, said that cooperation was crucial to optimise infrastructure development to improve Indonesia’s logistics performance index.
According to him, the World Bank lowered Indonesia’s logistics performance index in 2023 to 61st out of 139 countries. This position dropped by 10 ranks over two periods of Jokowi's administration.
Teuku sees that there are two reasons why Indonesia’s logistics performance index has declined. First, the development carried out in 5 years from 2018 to 2023 did not improve logistics performance.
“Second, infrastructure development during the administration of President Jokowi has not realised an increase in logistics performance,” he said in the Indonesia Economic Outlook – Macroeconomy Analysis publication, quoted on Tuesday (21/4).
However, he noted that dwelling time at main ports has been successfully lowered. The main ports include Belawan Port in Medan, Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta, Tanjung Emas Port in Semarang, Tanjungkarang Port, and Makassar Port. This shows that stevedoring activities are faster.
According to him, dwelling time is crucial as a long container stevedoring duration could increase logistics costs.
Regarding cooperation, Jokowi has issued Presidential Instruction No.5/2020 on Arrangement of National Logistics Ecosystem (NLE). The NLE is a platform that can eliminate repetition and duplication, simplify business process, integrate logistics platforms, facilitate digital payment, and develop infrastructure.
