PwC rated a Vanguard leader for R&D Consulting – A Cross-Service Analysis

Research & development (R&D) consulting is a cross-service discipline made up of innovation strategy and product development operations competencies targeted at improving clients’ organic growth engine. Both components of the discipline are undergoing significant change. Innovation strategy, a relatively young competency, is evolving rapidly in response to client demand shifting away from generic strategies toward the launch of new ideas in the marketplace on tight time frames. Product development operations, a more mature competency, is moving out of the lab and up the list of corporate priorities. This is happening as companies exhaust opportunities for productivity improvements elsewhere and seek better performance from a function that is both essential to their success in the marketplace and, in many sectors, a substantial contributor to costs.

R&D Consulting – A Cross-Service Analysis

According to ALM, PwC’s leadership is highlighted by its ability to create client impact through expertise and a unique ability to independently execute end-to-end projects across the full spectrum of client contexts. ALM notes that “PwC’s philosophy reflects its view of the implications of competitive threats shifting away from traditional sectors and the infusion of software and services into nearly every business.” They comment that “At a strategic level, the firm holds that innovation must consist of a fundamental business model rather than singular product or market moves.”

PwC provides services to this market through its Global Innovation & Development practice, which combines resources from its Strategy& affiliate and Operations Consulting practice. PwC’s service delivery starts with defining the innovation agenda with respect to strategic objectives and boundaries in terms of the business model and technology. From there, the firm devotes considerable attention to helping clients design an innovation operating model. A distinctive element of its service delivery is its BXT method for bringing together client teams at its Sandbox co-creation spaces to rapidly devise innovation strategies through a blend of business, experience, and technology perspectives.

ALM named PwC ‘best in class’ for its operating system capability area.  They highlight that “Armed with its Management Engineers affiliate, operations breadth across its Strategy& affiliate and PRTM heritage, and PLM capabilities, PwC is steeped in both the design and real-world management of R&D operating models.”

Bernd Jung, PwC’s Global Operations leader said: “We are delighted to be named a leader in this ALM report.  We are pleased that ALM noted that PwC has focused on adapting our development excellence and PLM service delivery to better accommodate software and services development and to assist clients in globalising their R&D. We are dedicated and committed to helping clients create and implement opportunities for success in the face of adversity.”
