How is your organization using fresh ideas and technologies to shape the mine of the future?

What is "The art of mining"? 

Now in its third and final year, The art of mining is a photography competition that highlights the positive impact of the Canadian mining community both in Canada and around the world.

Leading up to the 2018 PDAC conference in Toronto, we want to see how Canadian mining companies are shaping the mine of the future by using fresh ideas and technologies.

The awards

The art of mining is a photography competition that highlights the positive impact of the Canadian mining community both in Canada and around the world.

Submissions open:

October 4, 2017 - December 19, 2017

Finalist photos will be on display at The art of mining event on March 4, 2018. Event guests will vote on their favourite photograph to determine the grand prize winner.

The prize

The winning companies will receive the following amounts to donate to the community program or charity of their choice:

*New this year. The winner of the Artisitc merit prize will be determined through creative assessment by an independent panel of judges.

The criteria

  • Any Canadian mining company with active operations.
  • A senior executive from your company must be present at The art of mining awards ceremony on the evening of March 4, 2018 in Toronto, Ontario in order to be eligible for a prize. Companies without a senior executive present at the time of the prize presentation will be disqualified.

The focus

Photo submissions should answer the following question:

How is your organization using fresh ideas and technologies to shape the mine of the future?

Consider how diversity of thinking and innovative solutions are impacting the future of mining through operations, geography, technology, community, environment, finance and gender.

Phase 1: Photo submissions

  1. Review The art of mining competition rules and criteria.
  2. Submit your application via the form above. After completing the form, you must submit your photo by no later than December 19, 2017.
  3. Connect with The art of mining team to discuss phase 2 of the competition..

Photo submission requirements:

  • Required resolution is 300 dpi.
  • Photograph must be taken by an amateur photographer and/or employee of the participating company.
  • 100-word description must accompany the photo and answer the question: How is your organization using fresh ideas and technologies to shape the mine of the future?

Phase 2: The art of mining reception

Finalist photos will be on display at The art of mining event on March 4, 2018. Event guests will vote on their favourite photograph to determine the grand prize winner. There will also be an Artistic merit prize awarded as determined through an independent panel of judges.

Date: Sunday, March 4, 2018

Location: The Art Gallery of Ontario (317 Dundas Street West, Toronto)

Q: My company is not a Canadian mining company but we work in the mining space. Can we submit a photo to the competition?
A: The competition is only open to Canadian mining companies—that is, a company with active mining operations in Canada and/or headquartered in Canada.

Q: Can my company submit more than one photo to the competition?
A: Participating companies can only submit one photo to the competition.

Q: How is the winning photograph decided?
A: Photo submissions and their descriptions will be on display at The art of mining reception on March 4, 2018. Attendees at the event will each be given one ballot to vote on their favourite photograph. The photo with the most votes will be declared the grand prize-winner.

Q: How is the winner of the Artistic merit prize determined?
A: The winner of the Artistic merit prize will be determined through creative assessment by an independent panel of judges.

Q: Once I’ve submitted my entry form, what happens next?
A: A member of The art of mining team will reach out to you via your preferred choice of communication with information about where to send your photo submission, the specifications for the photo and the next steps in the process. All photo submissions must be received to PwC by no later than Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 11:59 PM.
