Chief Underwriting Officer

Our client is a Bermuda –domiciled, specialist insurance company, writing US Casualty and professional lines business. The company has an excellent reputation for client service, underpinned by a strong management team.  Due to continued growth, the company is looking to appoint a Chief Underwriting Officer, to lead the underwriting function.

Key roles and responsibilities

Reporting to the CEO, core duties will include the following:

  • Analyse, evaluate and make underwriting decisions in line with underwriting guidelines and recommendations, coordinating with analysts and other underwriting staff;
  • In conjunction with the CEO, define underwriting strategy and recommend business plans that will generate continued profitable business growth in current and future markets;
  • Review and analyse new insurance applications for risk exposure and compliance with underwriting guidelines;
  • Meet and negotiate with clients and brokers to build relationships and to develop new and renewal business;
  • Review contract wordings and act as signatory of insurance contracts;
  • Review, evaluate and report on loss activity;
  • Manage, train and appraise junior members of staff to enhance the underwriting skills within the underwriting team;
  • Responsible for underwriting document filings, accuracy of data entries to systems and contract integrity for accounts underwritten;
  • Contribute to strategic planning and to overall management of the company;
  • Assist the CEO in establishing operational structures;
  • Establish appropriate internal underwriting procedures and criteria to control risk;
  • Oversee the development of the company’s underwriting systems.

Qualifications, skills and experience

  • A minimum of 10-15 years’ underwriting or broking experience, with in-depth knowledge of U.S. casualty and professional lines markets;
  • Demonstrable track record of profitable transactions and generating business growth;
  • Demonstrable experience in writing and executing underwriting business plans;
  • Experience in structuring and purchasing reinsurance protections will be highly desirable;
  • Strong analytic skills and numerical aptitude will be essential;
  • Broad operational skills and experience in an underwriting or broking environment, including budgetary management, financial management, claims, resource allocation;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, together with the ability to work well in a small team environment;
  • Experience in media liability insurance would be helpful;
  • Strong U.S. and Bermuda broker relationships, allied to the credibility to promote and represent Mutual at senior management levels, will be required.
