Overview

Recently, identity theft has become a widespread problem for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as both individual and corporate taxpayers are being targeted by identity thieves who file fraudulent income tax returns and related forms to recoup sizeable refunds.

Launched in 2008, the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit serves as a way for taxpayers to report incidents of tax identity theft and work directly with the IRS to resolve their accounts questions efficiently.
