Navigating the Schedule H of the Redesigned Form 990 for Hospitals
The 2008 redesigned Form 990 includes 16 new schedules and seeks greater transparency, increased accuracy, and detailed reporting involving the activities of tax exempt organizations. Schedule H, which is specific to hospitals, is one of the new schedules included in the revised Form 990. Through the creation of Schedule H, the IRS established a new framework for hospitals to report their community benefit and charity care activities. While reporting for amounts of charity care and community benefit was optional for the 2008 Form 990, it is required for the 2009 filing.
In this podcast, members of PwC's Exempt Organizations and Healthcare Tax Services practice, Rob Friz and Laura Parello, discuss the background and structure of Schedule H, highlight some of its key features, and alert listeners to important planning steps that can be taken now in order to prepare organizations for a smooth transition to Schedule H compliance.
