PwC Honored for 10th Consecutive Year on FORTUNE's “100 Best Companies to Work For” List

NEW YORK, January 16, 2014 – For the 10th consecutive year, PwC US has been named one of FORTUNE's "100 Best Companies to Work For." PwC ranks number #65 overall on this year's list, the 17th annual instalment, up 16 places from the previous year.

"We're honored to be among the great companies on FORTUNE’s list again this year," said Bob Moritz, PwC’s U.S. Chairman and Senior Partner. “We’re committed to providing our people with a culture that inspires them to be their best and the flexibility and opportunities to achieve their personal and professional aspirations – all of which enables us to create value for our stakeholders. This award is a testament to the passion and dedication of our people, and the environment they work so hard to create.”

At PwC, we’re focused on helping our people discover and develop their talents, while unlocking a wealth of opportunities for professional achievement,” said Terri McClements, PwC's US Human Capital Leader and a firm Vice Chair. “We are extremely proud to have been recognized on FORTUNE’s list for the past 10 years, but we know our work is not yet done. From our commitment to innovative people practices, such as our real-time development initiative and our focus on flexibility, we’re committed to delivering an exceptional experience for our people every day.”

The activities, programs and initiatives supporting PwC's inclusion on the FORTUNE list include:

  • In FY13, PwC devoted more than two million hours to learning and development, with over 24% of that delivered in virtual formats for anytime access. The firm is also committed to helping its people learn on-the-go. PwC launched IQ, our mobile learning app, allowing us to be more responsive to unique development requirements.
  • PwC continues to recognize and reward talent. In FY13, 30% of new senior managers and director-level staff took a four-week sabbatical. And since it was established in 2011, more than 4,500 staff have attended our leadership development program, Discover. The program provides participants with an opportunity to develop personal leadership skills, strengthen professional networks and focus on their vision of the future.
  • In July 2013, PwC US Chairman Bob Moritz hosted a candid conversation with Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg about her best-selling book Lean In: Women, Work & the Will to Lead. Titled, "Leaning In, Together," the broadcast explored why so few women hold leadership roles and what companies and individuals can do about it. To date, over 40,000 PwC professionals and their clients have tuned in to hear Bob and Sheryl discuss how to create an inclusive environment that inspires each individual to live up to his or her full potential.
  • In October 2012, nearly 10,000 of our people were directly impacted by Hurricane Sandy. The PwC Charitable Foundation responded quickly offering immediate lodging assistance to staff through its People Who Care Fund, as well as hardship grants to our staff who experienced significant long-term issues. Ultimately, the Foundation provided almost $800,000 to those PwC staff who were affected by the storm.
  • PwC launched the PwC Professional, a career progression framework designed to accelerate our people’s development. The framework includes five dimensions of focus: business acumen, global acumen, relationships, technical capabilities and becoming a “whole leader” (one who is well rounded and has a diverse skill set).
  • To provide our people with greater flexibility in where and when they work,  we launched plan2flex, a flexibility contest designed to reward leaders and staff who created and implemented a flexibility plan. More than 1,800 plans were submitted, impacting nearly 11,000 staff.
  • With respect to Corporate Responsibility, we increased by 50% the number of people engaged in volunteering from across the U.S., to an all-time high of 17,000, reporting more than 208,000 volunteer hours. This includes 127,000 youth education hours to support PwC's Earn Your Future, a commitment to address youth education with a focus on financial literacy.

About the FORTUNE "100 Best Companies to Work For" List

To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America; 257 firms participated in this year's survey. More than 252,000 employees at those companies were surveyed by the institute, a global research and consulting firm operating in 45 countries around the world. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The other third is based on responses to the institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs, and diversity efforts. After evaluations are completed, if news about a company comes to light that may significantly damage employees' faith in management, we may exclude it from the list. Any company that is at least five years old and has more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible. The deadline for applying for next year's list is June 30, 2014. For an online nomination form, go to the  Great Place to Work Institute's web site. If you have further questions about the Best Companies to Work For, please e-mail fortunespecials@fortune.com.
