The following special report appeared in Managed Healthcare Executive’s February 2009 publication to address workplace wellness. The report addresses how MCOs need to take the initiative as employers to commit to wellness programs and the benefits that some MCOs have derived from putting these programs into practice. PricewaterhouseCoopers U.S. Healthcare Payer Practice Leader, Paul Veronneau, discusses relevant survey findings from a PwC Health Research Institute report called “What Employers Want From Health Plans” published in late 2008. Findings from the survey showed that a significant majority of large employers wanted to use wellness and disease management programs to help them manage rising healthcare costs but did not know how to use incentives effectively to get the best results.
The report also includes key opportunities for growth in the industry pertaining to data mining to collect and analyze data from wellness and disease management programs as well as how to effectively leverage incentives to encourage employee adoption.
