Examining relationships among the sustainability components shows that many of the inputs and outputs are directly affected by real estate operations and management, making facility managers and other property stakeholders critical players in effecting change.

Conventional thinking suggests that a building's design, construction, and engineering serve as the catalyst for superior building performance. While it is true these provide the foundation for a program, it is people who play a major role in the building’s long term performance.

Examination of the relationships among the sustainability components shows that many of the inputs and outputs are directly affected by real estate operations and management, making facility managers and other property stakeholders critical players in effecting change. While change can be difficult, there is good experience and leading practices in the public and private sectors that can be accessed.
