US infrastructure deal activity slows down, but investor interest remains high

One of the biggest limitations to US infrastructure investment today is the lack of suitable, bankable deals. The fact that deal values rose by 11% from H2 2016  to H1 2017 while deal volume decreased by 25% indicates that there is still a surplus of capital chasing too few projects.

Indeed, the demand for assets in the infrastructure sector is high, as evidenced by the level of capital available: Between new funds raised in 2017 and the existing “dry powder” already on hand, more than $100 billion is available to target all classes of North American infrastructure assets.

Our research shows that infrastructure funds, pension plans, energy funds, insurance companies, construction companies, and sovereign wealth funds are looking to invest in greenfield and brownfield assets across capital intensive sectors with a variety of barriers to entry. And the need for a clear program — whether it be privatization or public-private partnerships — to help close the gap in the US between infrastructure needs and investment opportunities has never been greater.
