A global software company needed to improve IT agility and efficiency to help drive business growth and reduce costs. But hurdles included an inefficient and aging IT infrastructure and a spiralling spend in data center operations. The infrastructure model was based on a technology-oriented approach, as opposed to a more agile and scalable service-oriented model. The company decided to implement an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform to help resolve these issues and achieve its business goals. While the company felt confident in a service-driven IaaS approach, the team didn’t know how best to accomplish this sweeping transformation.
The software company asked PwC to help craft a strategy and roadmap to implement an IaaS platform and move to a service-oriented IT model. They also asked PwC to help plan and execute the migration of the company’s applications, data, processes and users to the new environment. PwC’s team met with key stakeholders and helped develop an IaaS migration strategy, services framework, and a governance structure. We leveraged a proprietary methodology to enable stakeholders to commit to a strategy for the migration, and we helped establish a Program Management Office (PMO). The team also helped the company understand how to mature its operating processes, skills and talents.
Impact on client's business
PwC’s disciplined strategy and roadmap toward an IaaS platform enabled the software company to realize significant cost savings during planning and implementation stages. In fact, through the efficient, flexible, and scalable IaaS platform, the software company has already achieved the projected savings goals. The company’s new PMO enabled the transformation program to come in five percent under budget in the first year by deploying customized project-management practices. As a result of these successes, the software company has engaged PwC to extend the program and prepare the platforms for the future.
