Quick Aberdeen facts
- Aberdeen, the 'Silver City', is Scotland's third largest metropolis.
- The city boasts the title of Oil Capital of Europe thanks to the plentiful supply of crude oil in the North Sea.
Aberdeen
The PwC office in Aberdeen has around 100 staff, including seven partners and directors and 25-30 trainees at any one time. Reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of the city, we have people working with us from around PwC's global network - including Romania, Russia, Brazil, China, Singapore, Ghana and Canada. Two of our people are also enjoying secondments in Australia. The office also participates in the Flying Start initiative in partnership with Newcastle University.
Our business
As you would expect, many of our clients operate in Aberdeen's flourishing oil and gas sector, from the production side through to the service support side. As many of these foreign-owned (with the majority being American), our people have plenty of exposure to US GAAP and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, experience of which is highly marketable in the finance world.
We also work with business services companies and public sector organisations, and can boast a sizeable number of listed companies as clients.
Assurance, Tax and Business Recovery Services are our principle lines of service, while we're expanding our Transaction Services team in response to a buoyant oil and energy market. We also have a growing Risk Assurance Services team. Looking ahead, we're planning to grow our business with local entrepreneurs, private clients and owner-managed businesses (as members of the Chamber of Commerce in Aberdeen, PwC people get plenty of networking opportunities with local businesses).
Aberdeen has been bucking the trend of the UK and global economy, which is keeping our people busier than ever - and leading to excellent opportunities for students and graduates to experience working in a thriving, competitive professional services market.
Living life - and work - to the full
The office has its own sports and social committee. It's kept busy, organising a host of events from the traditional annual dinner and Christmas lunch to pub quizzes, treasure hunts, theatre outings and wine tastings. We've been involved in Activity Mix, which involves a team from the office competing against other businesses by participating in events such as rock climbing, Highland Games - even competitive ballroom dancing gets a look in!
There's plenty for the sports enthusiast to get involved in too - with a competitive football team (that plays against other firms and clients).
We give our staff the support to take on more corporate and social responsibility activities such as volunteering, blood donation and working with the Scottish Woodland Trust. As a participant in 'Force for Good', PwC Scotland's community affairs initiative, we've enjoyed links with local primary schools, helping with reading and painting a playground with lanes for cycle proficiency lessons. Staff are given time off to volunteer on various community projects - for instance, we've worked with the Scottish National Trust at nearby Castle Fraser. We have also participated in the Barnardo's Store Wars challenge.
PwC in Aberdeen presents a unique opportunity for ambitious students and graduates to experience something of a one-off in the UK economy - a city that's home to multinational corporates and local businesses alike, affording international travel opportunities and the chance to work with companies in a thriving (and newsworthy) industry. Add in a highly sociable culture and you have PwC in Aberdeen - an ideal place to embark on your finance and business career.
