What we do
The FTS group at PwC, part of Forensic Services, specialises in forensic data capture and electronic data analysis. The practice has dedicated, secure labs based in London, Birmingham and Belfast.
Our forensic technology team helps clients manage vast amounts of electronic data and navigate the corresponding legal processes. We:
- implement litigation readiness programs that decrease the cost of disclosure
- gather evidence to investigate and build a case
- negotiate data preservation and collection methods with opposing parties to make it efficient, relevant and proportional
- help clients to interpret and implement preservation orders to meet and prove compliance
- capture and process relevant data for review by our own investigators or the client's lawyers
- conduct investigations
- provide specialised analyses (including anti-money-laundering, claims, compliance, delay, dispute, forensic, intellectual property, quantum, rights management and transactional), including expert witness services
- conduct proactive and responsive reviews of transactional systems (looking for control weaknesses, fraud and irregularities)
- evaluate and remediate regulatory compliance.
Our work involves gathering, interpreting and analysing massive volumes of data and applying financial, statistical, accounting and computer forensic skills to create cost-effective strategies and solutions to complex business disputes. FTS is a growing practice, serving a diverse, international client base across a variety of industries and in many geographic markets - often working with colleagues abroad, giving you interesting and valuable international experience.
What you'll do
You'll start with a comprehensive 5-day induction that introduces you to other new starters, followed by a number of weeks learning about computer forensics, as well as attending training courses. You'll soon find yourself working on a project team that could see you working both in the office and on-site at clients. It's also possible that your assignment will take you to Europe or further afield if your project involves a cross-border investigation or team.
Typical projects you'll work on include investigating claims of bribes to secure contracts, writing bespoke software to automate evidence-gathering and advising prosecutors or defendants in serious fraud cases.
You'll be using a suite of methodologies developed by PwC's global team of over 300 forensic technology professionals, and you'll be given first-hand experience of cases at an early stage when you join us.
Our culture
You'll be working in a field that's constantly evolving and regularly presents fascinating situations, opening up your eyes to a world of financial crime and legal cases that few other professionals outside the law and police get to see. People who join us say they love the project work, as well as the opportunities for frequent international travel. And FTS is definitely not a team where you'll find yourself based at a desk all day - in fact, the variety or projects and locations you'll enjoy will keep you constantly challenged and stimulated.
Training & development
As well as your two-week induction, you'll benefit from superb learning tools and in-house and external training courses specifically on technology-related forensics issues. As you build your skills, you'll also enjoy mentoring and coaching from more experienced forensics professionals in the practice.
You'll be participating in PwC Experience (Generalist Route), our student recruitment offering that gives you mobility around the firm in order to gain as much experience as you can over your first five years with us. This will enable you to make a more informed decision about your future career - not to mention building your skills, resulting in all our people becoming more rounded and able professionals. Along the way, you'll liaise regularly with your personally assigned career coach, who'll help you focus on your personal development. Your coach will be able to guide you in identifying the areas of business where you're most likely to gain the experience you need to build the competencies you need.
You'll also benefit from mentoring from a partner within the practice, as well as of course leaning constantly from highly experienced senior computer forensics professionals, who'll be on-hand to give you informal support and impart their knowledge and skills.
After a year, you'll have the option to study for a professional qualification, for which you'll be supported by PwC, both financially and with the insight of colleagues who have already completed their studies, can help you identify ways to apply what you learn in the workplace.
About you
Ideally, you'll have a degree in computer science or another technical subject. To thrive in FTS, you'll also need to demonstrate strong powers of analysis and creative problem-solving, with the conviction and credibility to be able to justify your critical judgements and conclusions to senior colleagues and clients. You'll need to be instinctively curious - about everything, not just the obviously suspicious, as many of the cases you'll be involved with will be highly complex and taxing.
You'll naturally need to display teamwork skills and an ability to manage under pressure, as well as a willingness to constantly learn - particularly as you will be expected to develop skill in working with a range of technologies. You must also be prepared to develop a familiarity with accounting and economics issues that may impact on much of your work.
You'll need a 2.1 degree (in any discipline) and 280 UCAS points (or equivalent).
