The Island is a unique self-governing Crown dependency belonging to neither the UK nor the European Union. The Island is part of the British Isles but not Great Britain, and its natives are termed 'Manx'. The Island has its own parliament, laws, cultures, traditions, language and currency, although English is the recognised language and UK currency is accepted everywhere. The 'Three Legs of Man' is the Island's symbol of independence, and whilst there is much debate as to which way the legs should run (officially clockwise), the meaning is undisputed. In Latin. 'Quocunque Jeceris Stabit' means 'Whichever way you throw me, I will stand'.
The population is approximately 80,000, roughly half being Manx, with a varied mix of nationalities making up the remainder. This gives a uniquely safe and low-risk environment in which to live, yet with a cosmopolitan atmosphere to enjoy.
Combining opportunities for excellent international experience alongside superb facilities for golf, numerous team sports, watersports, plentiful sailing and motorsports (including the world renowned TT Races), together with the arts and music, the Island provides unrivalled work-life balance in a safe environment and amid beautiful scenery. People are extremely friendly and have time to stop and chat. The pace of life is more gentle and relaxed than living in a large city.
Excellent transport links make the UK and Ireland easily accessible. Flights take 40 minutes to Dublin, 20 minutes to Liverpool and 60 minutes to London City, meaning that weekends can easily be enjoyed to major provincial cities without eating into any holiday allowance.
The Isle of Man office represents a unique PwC proposition for students and graduates.
The heartbeat of the Isle of Man's economy is the financial services industry, which has recently been voted leading international offshore centre by the City of London. This is mirrored in our client base of banks, insurance companies, funds and captives, together with a mix of hospitality, manufacturing, retail and shipping clients. We offer Assurance and Advisory services, with a burgeoning Tax practice that's likely to continue growing rapidly.
The Isle of Man is therefore uniquely placed to give you financial services experience to rival London - but without the grind of the daily commute as many of our clients are within walking distance of our modern, open plan offices in the busy capital Douglas.
We have a staff of 90 (including seven partners and directors, and around 30 trainees), which means that there's a lively social life. Yet we're still able to get to know all our trainees properly, as the senior management team pride themselves on their accessibility. The active social committee organises various events throughout the year, including sailing days, golf days, fishing trips, theatre evenings, comedy club outings, trips to see local and visiting bands, Christmas parties and an annual black tie summer ball with live band, dinner and dancing. On the sporting front, we play in local business league hockey and cricket, and we enter into the Island's annual Viking Long Boat races.
There are also many informal and impromptu social events where we celebrate everything from exam passes to newborns, from birthdays to business wins. And we regularly enjoy the excellent restaurants and growing café culture that give the island its vibrant, modern feel.
For an island location, we enjoy a rich mix of backgrounds and nationalities in the office. As well as 'locals', we have people who've settled here from off the island for both personal and professional reasons. It all makes for a cosmopolitan working atmosphere - with Mauritius, India, China, Sierra Leone, Russia, Cyprus, Hungary and South Africa just some of the nationalities represented. Experienced staff come to us from the mainland and further afield, to benefit not just from our superb financial services client portfolio but also the earlier, increased responsibility we can provide as a smaller office.
And we're proud to say that many of our managers are 'home-grown', having started training with us a number of years ago and made a long-term decision to stay, to enjoy both island life and life at PwC.
We're firm backers of the firm's corporate responsibility agenda. For instance, our staff worked with local conservation experts to help renovate and extend a mountain bike course, while we've also dug in, helping to create a disabled walkway to enable access to a popular picnic area. Activities like that are rewarding in themselves - but they also help to enhance our already strong team spirit.
Currently, we also sponsor the Isle of Man junior hockey leagues and we're working to build links with local high schools.
Financial services experience to rival London - without the commute, the congestion, the smog or the crime rate. Forests, glens and hills within 10 minutes of the office - and don't forget fabulous personal tax breaks. It's no wonder people who qualify here, tend to stay.
