| What he likes about working at PwC: | It may well be a cliché, but I can honestly say each day is different, presenting new opportunities for myself and my team to provide further value to our internal customers, and therefore through to our business clients. Our 'One Firm' approach to business problem solving, really means that we're a cohesive and collaborative workforce. |
Ross is a Business Technology Leader in our IT Business Management team. He joined in 2006 and is based in London.
PwC appealed to me because of its client base - I liked the sound of the exposure it would give me in my initial role as a relationship manager. And it was clear to me that they very much encourage the entrepreneurial approach; having previously run my own business, that was definitely a plus - they like people who will bring ideas to the table. They actually want you to challenge the status quo and keep looking for smarter ways of doing things. There's a highly collaborative culture too; everyone's views are heard.
It's a meritocracy in the true sense - if you deliver well, you'll be rewarded. On promotion to my current role, my responsibilities - initially for infrastructure and procurement - were expanded to include areas such as knowledge management, our online presence, business development and communications. It was a huge challenge - but that's why I joined PwC.
I manage big teams, big budgets and big projects; I'm kept busy. I have to be constantly aware of what the firm's looking to achieve; everything from cost savings to service improvements to delivering messages to clients. Technology impacts on virtually everything we do, and it's my job to make that impact as positive as possible. My team was recently responsible for a massive relocation - managing the dispersal of 5000 workers to five different sites; ensuring they could all continue working and that networks and systems would be in place on time to minimise business interruption. There were tight deadlines and enormous logistical considerations - but the support and resources here are first class. And the sense of achievement and pride when the project ran smoothly was unbeatable.
I like having to come up with solutions to big challenges. The business we're in means that there's constant change, and always a need to respond to that flux and re-prioritise. I also have to personally keep pace with what's going on in the technology world - for instance, part of my focus at the moment is on sustainable IT and what more the firm can be doing around that. But those kinds of things make the job all the more interesting.
Looking ahead, I'm mapping out my own career too; I have a mentor within the firm who's there to help me achieve my goals. I have fixed objectives that give me something to aim for and measure against, and so far everything's going according to plan, which is great.
