Aaron Goh,
Corporate Tax Services "PwC is truly a global firm... "
“Good day mate!” is probably how I should greet you since I am writing this from my desk in PwC Sydney. Indeed my 2-odd years in PwC have been quite an experience.
Let us start with the question that I have had to answer countless times since I started work. “You’re not an accountancy graduate? Why did you join PwC??” The shell-shocked looks I inevitably get still put an indulgent smile on my face.
To me, my being here is simple proof of the openmindedness of a truly global organisation. PwC provides a supportive and encouraging learning environment regardless of educational background. It is because of the firm’s willingness to invest in us that I am now happily in Sydney, pursuing a formal accountancy education in the form of the Chartered Accountant Program.
Opportunities for international experiences are plentiful, given our number of offices worldwide and the vast diversity of our clientele. The exposure to different industries is important. You really do develop a different perspective working with a broad spectrum of clients, ranging from retail to industrial to financial services. My work has provided me a valuable insight into so many different businesses.
No doubt the work is demanding. It can be hectic and immensely challenging. My colleague once proclaimed in jest, “This job requires me to think more than I am capable of!” That pretty much sums up the intellectual challenges we face in the course of our daily work.
The stress of the job can take its toll and that is precisely why our working life is deliberately interspersed with so many recreational activities. Call them “de-stressing” activities if you like, PwC truly believes in having a work-life balance. There are free movies, dancing lessons, tennis, badminton and the list goes on. In fact, most of the colleagues I know today, I met them through recreational firm events, be it knocking back some drinks at a nearby pub or trading blows at the tennis courts.
So the next time someone asks me why I chose to join PwC, my response will be, “Why not?”
