DEMO Project – Monitoring and verification of emission reductions at sea

The launch of the DEMO project was a direct response to the initiative by DG Environment as regards a request for a demonstration that the monitoring and verification of NOx and SO2 emission reductions at sea is feasible.

The request to execute the demonstration was made to the Swedish Ship owners Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers following their presentation of the proposal for a EU-wide emission trading system of NOx and SO2, which includes shipping. The proposal was presented to the Cabinet and to the Air and Noise unit of DG Environment.

Another proposal presented to the EU Commission is the SEAaT proposal of emission trading, which also have raised the interest to explore the possibilities to monitor and verify emissions at sea.
