DEMO Project

Scope of the DEMO Project

The scope of the Demo Project is to demonstrate, in practise, that the monitoring and verification of NOx and SO2 emission reductions from sea-going ships is feasible. The monitoring and verification will be tested on reduction techniques for NOx emissions (Selective Catalytic Reduction and Internal Engine Measures) and reduction techniques for SO2 (Low Sulphur Fuel and Scrubbing technology).

Emissions reductions traded as emission credits, or environmental differentiated reimbursements on harbour and fairway dues, need to be reliable and credible. Thus these reductions cannot be proven to be real unless they are monitored, calculated, and reported. A vital requirement for the marketability of the emission reductions is verification by a third party. The higher the level of accuracy the ship owner can produce, the higher the trustworthiness and, therefore, the higher the market value of the emission reductions. All sources of errors are, in general, the responsibility of the ship owner (i.e. the seller).
