The Sixth EC Framework Research, Technological Development and Presentation Programme

The aim of framework programmes, including the 6th Framework Programme, is to co-finance research work, present the results of such work and the accompanying activities on a European level. The Programme provides a coherent pan- European framework for supporting R&D as part of EU research policy and constitutes a five - year strategic plan for the period 2002 - 2006. The 6FP is financed by the European Commission.

The total budget of the 6FP covering the four - year period 2003-2006 is 17.5 billion euro, representing an increase of 17% of the 5th FP. This comprises 3.9% of the EU budget and ca. 6% of the public sector budget for research. There are no national quotas for 6FP funds.

The EU funds projects, which involve several partners from different countries. The financial support for applicants amounts to 50% for research projects, 35% for implementation projects and 100% (of direct costs only) for management and training purposes. The exact amount can vary substantially depending on the type of project, the number of its partners and scope of the research to be carried out. FP funds are allocated following competitive "calls for proposals". The next call for proposals will be announced in the second week of December 2002.

The European Commission identified seven main programme lines within the 6FP. To achieve the biggest possible impact in these fields, over 12 million euro has been allocated to them.
