Some 600 children of Busuanga, Palawan experienced, perhaps their most unforgettable Christmas ever when our Corporate Responsibility (CR) Team travelled to this remote area to hold a Community Outreach program last December. Busuanga residents suffered the same brunt of super Typhoon Yolanda when it made a final stop in this place before exiting the country more than a month ago, leaving more than 6,000 dead in Eastern Visayas and nearby provinces.
Our team consisted of Assurance Partner & CR Leader Gina Detera, Tax Executive Director Myrna Fernando, Assurance & Markets Director Allan Cao, and Markets Manager Dennis Bautista. Joining the relief efforts were Mike Murphy (PwC US - San Francisco) and wife Michelle, who were on their honeymoon in Coron, Palawan but decided to volunteer their time for the typhoon survivors. Members of the local Parish helped in organizing the community, repacked relief goods and prepared snacks for the children.
San Isidro is an hour ride on a small and narrow banca off the coast of Busuanga. Over 200 students gladly received school bags and school supplies, clothing, slippers, hygiene kits, blankets and canned goods. Our team also hosted fun games and a feeding program for the children. With the events ending late in the day, our CSR people braved their banca ride in total darkness as they headed back to the mainland.
Our team hosted a Christmas Party for some 400 students of the Nuestra Senora dela Salvacion Parish School. Children from the Day Care to Grade 5 level were all smiles as they claimed their school bags, school supplies and a new pair of slippers. Grade 6 students also received school bags. The young ones enjoyed the games and snacks, while their parents were equally grateful to receive relief items.
The children and people of communities we visited in Busunga extend to each and everyone in our Firm their thanks for all your donations of school supplies, toys, clothing hygiene materials, note of encouragement, money and a lot more. They may not be able to repay the kindness you have extended to them, but with this note, they send their love and blessings to you and your loved ones. Let us continue to think of more ways to help other people like them currently struggling to survive.
