StarBiz-ICR Malaysia CEO Forum 2010 – climate change concerns in the face of growth and profitability

KUALA LUMPUR, 11 October 2010 - The Star and the Institute of Corporate Responsibility (ICR) Malaysia today organised a CEO Forum at Menara Star in conjunction with the StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility (CR) Awards 2010.

The forum, themed “Climate change vs. profits: Striking a balance” was moderated by Dato’ Johan Raslan, Chairman of ICR Malaysia and featured a distinguished line-up of panellists, comprising:

  • Atul Bhargava, Managing Director, Intel Malaysia Sdn Bhd
  • Azran Osman-Rani, Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia X
  • Caroline Russell, Chief Executive Officer, Boh Plantations Sdn Bhd
  • Osman Morad, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia.

The CEO Forum is also a platform for Malaysia’s corporate leaders to share their views on a topic relevant to the times. This year’s theme was selected in recognition of our country’s aspirations to transform into a high-income nation and taking into consideration recent developments on environmental concerns, both in the country and globally.

The StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Awards were introduced in 2007 to recognise and honour companies which demonstrate outstanding and leading CR practices that go beyond community and philanthropic activities. With these Awards, the organisers hope that Malaysian companies will assimilate CR values and sustainable thinking in their business strategies and goals, so as to raise the business standards of companies to the benefit of all stakeholders.

As in previous years, Awards will be given out in four categories, namely Marketplace, Workplace, Environment and Community, and for two market capitalisation segments (RM1 billion and above, and below RM1 billion).

Assessed by an independent third-party organisation, CSR Asia, the final selection of winners is decided by a distinguished panel of judges, comprising:

  • YBhg Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar, Chairman of Securities Commission (SC) Malaysia (Chief Judge)
  • YBhg Dato’ Yusli Mohamed Yusoff, CEO of Bursa Malaysia Berhad
  • YBhg Dato’ Kok Wee Kiat, Honorary President of Business Council for Sustainable Development Malaysia
  • YBhg Datuk Peter Wentworth, Chairman of British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce.

The Awards are supported by the SC and Bursa Malaysia, and sponsored by Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, and the working partners are PricewaterhouseCoopers and Securities Industry Development Corporation (SIDC).

The winners are expected to be announced early 2011. For more information about the Awards, log on to www.thestar.com.my/starbizicrm/.
