PwC Malaysia launched a report on sustainability strategy at a recent event attended by sustainability practitioners and corporate affairs professionals.
Titled 'Going beyond philanthropy?', the report is based on a survey of prominent companies across different industries in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam.
The survey takes a first-of-a-kind regional look at how companies are embedding sustainability in a strategic manner across their business and what the key driving forces are.
Sundara Raj, Consulting Leader, PwC Advisory Services Malaysia, giving the opening remarks
Jack Cunningham, Associate Director, PwC Advisory Services Malaysia
Yvonne Au Yong, Manager, PwC Advisory Services Malaysia
The survey reveals some interesting findings:
81% of survey respondents recognise the relevance of sustainability to their business but less than half actually have a strategy aligned with their business goals.
Only 3% have a strong leadership structure in place to spearhead sustainability initiatives effectively.
64% of companies report on sustainability in some form but only 26% have adopted a global reporting framework to guide their reporting.
Some important takeaways:
ASEAN companies need to relook their sustainability priorities and recognise the value of managing future risks for long-term resilience.
They will find it difficult to truly integrate sustainability into the business if they don’t invest in proper monitoring and reporting frameworks or engage their stakeholders in driving their sustainability initiatives.
