Globalising Growth: Connect, Compete, Collaborate

The 7th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF7) was held in Astana, Kazakhstan over 7 - 9 June 2011.

During the event, over 2,000 delegates from 50 countries convened to discuss a wide range of topics such as globalising Islamic banking and finance in relation to the trend of spreading growth across the region.

The forum paid significant attention to Islamic finance.Two plenary sessions were dedicated to this topic, in view of the growing interest in Islamic finance across Central Asia, home to over 50 million Muslims.

PwC's Global Islamic Finance leader, Mohammad Faiz Azmi moderated a plenary session, themed "Islamic Banking and Finance: Raising the Bar." H.E. Zhamishev Bolat Bidakhmetovich, Minister of Finance, Kazakhstan, was among the panellists to this full-house session.

The forum also included the following line-up of speakers:

  • Dato’ Sri Nazir Razak (Group Chief Executive, CIMB Group)
  • Khairy Jamaluddin (Chairman, UMNO Youth)
  • Tatyana Zhdanova (Vice-President for External Economic Relations Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kazakhstan)
  • Isabel Romero Arias (Director General, Halal Institute, Spain), among others

The Forum serves as a platform for world leaders in government and business from the OIC countries to converge and discuss trade and economic issues affecting the Muslim and the wider world. PwC Malaysia was the Global Knowledge Partner of WIEF for the fifth consecutive year.
