Partnering for sustainability

In 2007 a non-profit relief organisation providing medical and humanitarian services worldwide, MERCY Malaysia, wanted to enhance its governance and control framework to meet the requirements of the Humanitarian Accountability Partnership (HAP). HAP is a partnership of member agencies that share a commitment in ensuring humanitarian organisations are accountable to disaster survivors through self-regulation, compliance verification and quality assurance certification.

They sought the help of PwC Malaysia (PwC).  Rather than just providing a report, PwC worked with MERCY Malaysia on a pro-bono basis to conduct a Process Mapping course,  followed by a workshop to apply theories learnt in process mapping for disaster relief operations.

PwC's efforts helped MERCY Malaysia achieve their HAP certification – making them the first organisation in Asia and the third worldwide, to be accorded this coveted certification.

In 2010, PwC continued our work with MERCY Malaysia where we organised a Business Continuity Conference titled 'Tomorrow happened yesterday', aimed at sharing best practices and experiences on disaster preparedness and crisis management. Funds collected from the workshop were channelled back to MERCY Malaysia for their work.
PwC Malaysia has also responded to numerous appeals for natural disaster relief  support since 2008 by raising funds from our people, and matching them Ringgit for Ringgit, to  support the relief work needed.
