The auditing function is central to our business. Providing other business advisory services is also integral to the accountant's role and this expertise, built on your auditing foundation, will play a key part in your professional development.
What is an audit?
A shareholder invests money in a company and delegates day-to-day control of the company to the board of directors - the management. The law requires an independent person - the auditor - to report on the annual accounts, the records describing how management has performed in financial terms.

How do we approach an audit?
The last decade has seen significant developments in the analytical methods and technologies we use. We have developed a unique 'business approach' to auditing, which combines an assessment of the key features of the business - its information systems, its management, the potential for significant financial error - and therefore the inherent risks involved.
Worldwide, audit partners and managers concentrate on top-down strategic planning for each client in its own business environment.
The audit team use the latest PCs and computer software to plan and execute the audit process in conjunction with the audit manager and partner. This process involves new auditing and working techniques including risk analysis, and an emphasis on students and managers working closely together as a tight-knit team.
Systems Process Assurance
A growing and crucial part of our audit service involves detailed examination of computerised systems which process client's data and generate financial statements. You can join the Systems and Process Assurance Teams to specialise in this role. You will develop your technical skills through hands-on exposure to complex client accounting systems.
A steep learning curve
During a typical 2/3 year period, you will visit many different clients - sometimes returning to the same client, in a more senior role, in following years. You need to have an understanding of your client's business before you can fully understand the accounts and figures. You will learn fast by asking questions of the client's staff - directors, managers and accountants - and understanding your client's business strategy.

PwC Audit Core Mandatory Programme
The PwC Audit Core Mandatory Programme includes a number of continuous audit training programmes designed for all levels of assurance staff to update and continue building on knowledge and skills acquired from previous audit experience and training programmes.
This mandatory programme includes an induction course which a new assurance recruit will attend. It introduces PwC in general and assurance in particular. The course will develop a new recruit’s understanding of business and IT, while also introducing the practical skills attributable to an auditor. These include technical accounting and auditing expertise, interpersonal and communication skills, and client service.
As our staff progress within the firm and gain more experience, we offer continuous opportunities for development of their accounting and auditing skills both through on-the-job experience and through our mandatory learning and education programme. Typically this programme includes an annual update on methodology, on International Standards on Auditing for all assurance staff including partners and senior managers. It also includes specific training for computer auditing specialists.
PwC Audit Core Non-Mandatory Programme
From time to time the firm also organises audit training courses that fall out of the mandatory curriculum. These courses vary in length and content and seek to address specific areas of staff development. This programme includes training in business risks and controls, e-learning sessions on controls and tests of details and more generically training on project management and enquiry skills.
PwC Accounting IFRS Curriculum
The PwC Accounting IFRS curriculum includes training programmes designed for teams working on engagements which report under IFRS. The programme would include an annual update and an advanced IFRS training session.
Other training programmes
Staff from all service lines are required to attend an annual independence seminar as well as other training programmes either related to an individual’s line of service, to his/her career progression or to specific global or local market and economic changes.
