Candidates must satisfy the following eligibility criteria before registering for the CPA credential:
- Either be a US citizen or a citizen or long-term resident of the countries in which the exam is being administered
- Have a bachelor’s degree or higher (usually 150 semester hours in specific subject areas determined by the state’s Board of Accountancy
- In addition to passing the exams, candidates may be required to complete a period of work experience to obtain a CPA license
