Pianist named 20th PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year

Media release

Pianist Krystian Lamb has been named ‘PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year 2012’ in the 20th anniversary year of the competition.

De La Salle student Krystian fought off competition from Cornet player George Bailey, Alto Saxophonist Grace MacDonald and Violinist Elliot Samphier in the final of the competition, which took place on Saturday 3 March at the Jersey Opera House. He becomes the eighth pianist to win the competition in its 20 year history.

To win the title, Krystian performed a short programme of music that included music by Bach, Debussy and Beethoven.   As well as being awarded the PwC Jersey Young Musician of the Year Trophy and a cheque for £200, Krystian also received a trip for himself and a friend or family member to attend a concert of his choice in the UK and has been invited to give a recital in the summer at the Jersey Arts Centre.

The four finalists proceeded to the final from a total of thirty entrants in the initial sectional heats in January. They were adjudicated by a panel of external judges chaired by visiting UK musician Sue Beckett.

In addition, George Bailey was presented with the Jersey Symphony Orchestra Award for ‘Best Performance of an Individual Piece’ for his performance of Goedicke’s Koncert Prelude.

Dr Graham Cox, Head of the Jersey Instrumental Music Service, said: “The final of this year’s competition was incredibly strong and provided an excellent showcase for the exceptional talent we have here in Jersey. Krystian and his fellow finalists all deserve huge congratulations for their performances, whilst recognition should also go to the teaching staff who do such a fantastic job in instilling in their pupils the kind of discipline and dedication that has been so evident throughout this competition.”

Karl Hairon, Partner at PwC, commented: “The fact it was the 20th anniversary of the competition made the final this year particularly special, and the standard of performance from all four finalists was outstanding.  This competition has a great track record of inspiring many participants to drive forward with their musical careers and I am sure there are a number in this year’s competition who will go on to experience musical success.”

In the meantime, PwC will very soon begin working with Graham to plan where we want to take the competition next year, and I’m sure, like his predecessor, he will have lots of exciting ideas.
