Apply for a Higher Apprenticeship (CI) Explore your career options now

Decided against university? Then join us after your A-levels or equivalent and start earning while you work towards a professional accounting qualification.

By choosing this route you're likely to gain your professional qualification faster than your friends who go to university. Our Higher apprenticeship (CI) could be right for you; working in either Advisory, Assurance or Tax.

Choose your route

Growth and change are two realities that no business can afford to ignore. We help our clients with sustainable business strategies towards innovation and growth while reducing costs and leveraging talent. These are just as essential as having the agility and creativity to respond to rapidly changing environments. By taking time to understand businesses and challenges they are facing, our Advisory teams use local and global knowledge to help challenge conventions and introduce and deliver strategies that work specifically for the client.

Assurance is the largest of our business areas and most of the work we carry out here is known as audit. Assurance helps organisations analyse every aspect of what they do, then advises them on whether their financial statements are true and fair, if they're meeting their regulatory responsibilities and how they can improve their performance. Our work in auditing client accounts is perhaps what we're best known for. It's certainly the foundation of our business and at the leading edge of best practice. But there's a lot more to it than just looking at numbers. To offer advice that's genuinely informed, we need to understand every aspect of a client's business - its markets, technology, people and management as well as its finances. That means you'll need to be as good with people as you are at analysing and interpreting information.

Everyone wants to be as tax efficient as possible and our expertise covers every conceivable area of tax from corporate to personal. Not only do we look after our local and international clients - UK companies, multi nationals, but also trusts, partnerships and private individuals.

Great training at your finger tips

Our introductory training will give you a good grounding in book-keeping, and auditing or tax specific skills, while improving your general business awareness. And the learning doesn't stop there. Formal study, on-the-job experience and coaching from colleagues mean you'll continually pick up new skills and develop your business knowledge. Together with your personal coach, you'll review regular feedback on your performance and use it to keep your career moving forward.

The detail

Students joining the Higher apprenticeship (CI) route in Assurance or Tax can expect to qualify as either a Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) or Chartered Accountant (ACA) within three years. Tax specialists can then go onto studying towards a specific Tax Adviser qualification.

You'll begin by tackling basic sections of client audits, carrying out specific checks on financial records and making sure everything adds up. You'll also test controls - systems companies put in place to prevent errors and to detect fraud. Perhaps the best thing is the variety of teams and clients you'll work with and the diversity of projects you'll be involved in. You'll also spend much of your time on site with clients.

As a Higher apprenticeship (CI) Tax student you will be more office based, but you'll still enjoy plenty of interaction with clients in meetings and over the phone. You'll support busy client teams advising their clients on issues surrounding paying and minimising their tax bills. This could mean doing anything from carrying out technical research to attending meetings with senior staff and drafting client correspondence.

Of course, for both roles, there'll be some typical office duties too. But as you gain experience we'll trust you with more responsibility and challenges.

Quiet please, exams in progress...

Whichever route you choose expect study leave to attend college plus plenty of support from our Professional Qualifications team. You'll have to do some study in your own time too, but all your hard work will be rewarded when you get your qualification.
