Direct Tax Code 2009

India has taken a step towards bringing about structural changes in its direct taxes by releasing a draft of the Direct Tax Code (the “Code") for public debate. The Code follows the promise made by the Finance Minister in his Budget Speech on July 6, 2009, of releasing the draft Code for public debate within 45 days.
The Code along with a Discussion Paper was released on August 12, 2009 with the stated objective of improving the efficiency and equity of the Indian tax system by eliminating distortions in the tax structure, introducing moderate levels of taxation and expanding the tax base.
The draft Code is currently open for comments from the public. The Finance Minister has indicated that the Code will be introduced in Parliament in the forthcoming Winter Session (i.e. November-December 2009)

We at PwC are playing a key role in fostering awareness and debate on the Code through our webcasts, articles and alerts on the subject and by making representations to the Government.
