Why did you choose PwC Indonesia as a place to start your career?
PwC Indonesia (PwC) became my dream Firm to work for after hearing about it from my sister’s friend who worked in the company when I was still in senior high school. She said that this Firm was a great place to work for. The supportive working environment and fair treatment on the remuneration were some of the reasons why I decided later on to work in this Firm.
I never dreamt on to be a tax consultant before. My initial career goal was to be an auditor. It was mainly the poor images working in a tax field which put me into my hesitation. My perspective on looking at this career line certainly shifted after hearing the presentation from one of the TLS members in a Job Fair presentation event. PwC is well known as a Tax Firm which upholds integrity in term of anti-bribery and anti-money laundry. The internal procedure of client’s profiling/risk management is in place before engaging to any clients.
I, then, decided to start my career as a Tax consultant in PwC ever since.
Tell me about your transition period and experience from college to work?
It was quite hard me, at the first place, to adjust myself with the nature of the work as well as the working hours. However, as time goes by, I can actually adapt myself with the working pace. Not to mention that I was given with new and challenging tasks that I had never known before. Those projects have given me a learning experience in understanding my role as a consultant.
The most interesting thing when I started my career here was the Shadowing program. I was involved in one of the project with the Partner and the experience gave me the opportunity to learn directly from the expert. Not only that I can have the opportunity to apply the knowledge that I have got from University to the real working situation, but I can also learn in building my soft skills, i.e. building relationship and communication with clients and Tax Office officials.
What did you like most about your Line of Service (LoS)?
What I like most from TLS is the task varieties. It’s not only about the variety of the projects, but it is also the opportunity to work with so many colleagues, managers and variety of clients as well as government officials.
I’ve learned many things in my exposure to projects such as time management, work efficiency, collaboration as well understanding people from various backgrounds. The nature of the work gives me the opportunity to work as a consultant and advisors for my clients, such as research, documentation preparation, representing clients in tax court, tax advisory etc.
The combination of these is the reason why I love working in TLS.
Besides the job itself, what is it like working in PwC, i.e. working environment?
I do love the working environment in here. From the first day when you joined, you will get one Buddy who will become your friend whom you can share everything with. You will also get a formal coach who will guide in a technical area and monitor your learning progress. Nevertheless, everyone can be your informal coach who can help you whenever you seek for guidance.
There’s no gap between seniors and juniors while working in PwC. I surely felt welcome by everybody, including the Partners, the first time I joined this company. In addition, we surely like to celebrate our small victories every time we’ve done a project. It certainly boosts my energy before taking the next challenge.
Tell me about a day of your life as a Senior Associate/ Tax Consultant?
Senior associate level is the middle level in the Firm between associate level and higher levels (Assistant Manager up until Partner). Therefore, I have to work with, practically, all levels to help clients in addressing tax issues in a daily basis. To ensure that the projects run efficiently, I usually coach my associates to ensure that they get the correct understanding on scope of work, supervise their working progress as well as review the deliverables to check on quality of works. In addition, I also supervise the whole project management for a team including managing timeline and handling issues if any as well as update all information to the higher levels later on. I closely work with the higher levels in term of give update, follow up and discuss on deliverables. At the same time, I also work with the client through ongoing communication to get the works done.
How do you think the trainings given contribute to your success in your job?
There are so many trainings that everybody can participate in. I can improve my knowledge and gain expertise through all of the trainings given. Not only has it given us a strong baseline theoretically but also in practical through sharing experiences with colleagues.
In PwC, there are two kinds of training, technical and soft skill trainings. For technical trainings, I have attended Tax Technical Discussion, Basic Infocomm, Advance Infocomm, and also Tax Master. These trainings basically update me on new regulations and latest trend/news in tax field. As for the soft skills trainings, I have joined Coaching Clinic training. The training teaches me on strengthening my leadership skill as well as the quality of relationship with associates and colleagues. It really helps me carrying my role as senior associate, which is really the starting point to be a leader in this Firm.
What kind of challenges that you usually meet in your job? Who helps you in meeting those challenges?
One of the main challenges would be the ability to multi task. Due to the nature of the job, I have to be able work multi tasking. In one period of time, I can handle not only one case and one client, but it can be more than 10 projects with 10 different clients at the same time. Each of the projects has its own tight and adjacent deadline between one and the other. It is certainly quite challenging to juggle between projects. In addition, I also have to update myself on current regulations and information as well as issues in media which can take times, but at the same time important to do in order to broaden my knowledge to be able to do the correct analysis and advise. But, the good news is there are so many colleagues and seniors who will help you in overcoming those challenges.
What is the one piece of advice you would tell anyone who is considering a career at PwC?
Be flexible, open minded, and have the courage to convey your ideas and challenges to others. Challenge is everywhere. However, I would say what makes us different in here is that the fact that we always collaborate with each other to achieve our goals.
What is the most important thing you have learned in your career at PwC?
Working in PwC is not only about gaining knowledge on the technical skills. But the most important thing is to learn on how to apply both technical and soft skills in addressing to varieties of situations. The experience that I have gained in here has shaped me to be a more matured person, more persistent and the ability to always have a positive mindset on everything that we’ve dealt with.
How would you describe PwC in three words?
- Dynamic – PwC provides challenging projects for those who love variety in their works.
- Distinctive – PwC is a number one firm, all of the employees are shaped to be distinct and special from others, given to the many experiences that enrich us, both in the technical and soft skills.
- Quality – Deliver excellence to clients is certainly one of our values. We put knowledge, skill and professionalism to our work.
How is the social life at PwC?
Generally, we have what we call the busy season and low season, due to the nature of our works. Busy season is the season where workload is high with tremendous projects to be done. It usually happened in December – April. Overtime is certainly the case during the busy season. Whereas, low season is basically a normal season for us.
Although workload is high during the busy season, it doesn’t mean that we can’t have the fun time in our works. Every time we’ve done a project, we usually have a small celebration to celebrate every victories. During the low season, we usually have a yearly outing event where all of us can have a great vacation together while at the same time increase the emotional bonding between the team members.
So, I would say that the social life in here creates bonding between team members. While working as a consultant is challenging but the fun is certainly here as well.
Besides the fun time in the work place, you can still have your own personal time outside the work. Having a career while at the same having a family, is something that is possible in this Firm. Some tips from me, if the workload is high, you can always talk to your manager so that workload can be allocated to another team member to ensure equal work distribution. You can also anticipate the high workload by optimizing your time to finish your tasks during the normal working hours so you can go on time.
I believe the key to all things is time management. The time that you invest in your work is basically your personal choice. You can either manage your work in a timely manner and go home on time and meet your family or stay late at the office. It’s all about making choices between options based on your personal preferences.
