A global glass products company

The issue

The client is a global vertically integrated glass manufacturer, producing basic flat glass, architectural glass, auto glass, as well as specialty chemicals. They are the US business of an Asia-based parent company.

The client was concerned about the effectiveness of its systems for managing and maintaining Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) compliance. They originally enquired whether PwC could perform EH&S compliance at all its US sites. Because the client has over two dozen sites in the US this would have been an expensive and time-consuming undertaking.

Our approach

PwC proposed to perform a review of the client’s underlying systems for EH&S compliance management, and to identify critical EH&S risks. We included in the review an assessment of the client’s conformance with the international management system standards for environmental (ISO 14001) and health and safety (OSHAS 18001) management.

The outcome

The client conducted this project as part of an overall compliance risk management exercise. The results of the project:

  • Allowed the parent company to better understand how its US business approaches EH&S compliance and the associated risks;
  • Enabled the client to gauge the level of effort necessary to achieve conformance with specific sections of these international standards for EH&S management systems;
  • Helped the client –– through PwC’s recommendations –– improve its EH&S management systems to mitigate the risk of non-compliance penalties that would impact its brand / reputation.
