This is our seventh study of family businesses globally. This year 2,484 semi-structured telephone and online interviews were conducted via Kudos Research in London with key decision makers in family businesses in over 40 countries worldwide between 29th April 2014 and 29th August 2014. This reporting and analysis takes into account the responses of 2,378 respondents. The turnover of participating companies was from over USD$5m to over USD$1bn. The interviews were conducted in the local language by native speakers and tended to average between 20 and 35 minutes. The results were then analysed by Jigsaw Research.

For the purposes of this survey, a ‘family business’ is defined as a business where
