Time to choose: Decision-making in an age of fiscal austerity

All of the political parties now agree - spending cuts and tax rises will be needed to address the UK's public sector debt mountain. We recently explored the issue of dealing with debt through a three-part roundtable series in collaboration with Demos, which considered the challenge of getting the nation's finances back in order without disproportionately impacting disadvantaged groups.

The roundtables engaged politicians, academics and other senior opinion formers across the political spectrum around how public spending can be reduced and more revenue raised. This publication shares the views from these roundtables on the case for both spending cuts and tax rises, which would allow the next government to act on the fiscal deficits and achieve the fiscal consolidation needed by the market.
