From 2013, GP practices will be expected to work together as consortia in local areas, and in partnership with other health care professionals and local authorities to commission services directly from hospitals or provide these themselves.
The recent NHS White Paper announced the abolition of strategic health authorities and primary care trusts in England, with their £80 billion a year budget handed over to GP consortia.
