Hamburg 2020: seize opportunities, shape the future

The major economic centres in Germany are in competition with each other, and this will intensify even more in the future. In this competition Hamburg - although representing the gateway to the world and an important base for foreign trade – is not on top rank.

Hamburg is one of the most important cities of Germany’s export trade. But compared with Munich, Stuttgart or the Rhine-Main-Region the economic performance of Hamburg is middling. The future of the Hanseatic city depends on demography, work capacity, education and attractiveness. So the question is, what does the metropolitan region have ahead of the other cities and what is the potential of Hamburg? The answer of this question is the topic of this PwC and HWWI study “Hamburg 2020”. The study shows scenarios of the resident structure in 2020 as well as the recommendation to develop Hamburg into a centre of research.
