Non-profit organizations (short: NPO) which are funded mostly by donations often face the dilemma that donations and subsidies should be used for the good case of the organization whilst administrative costs should remain at a minimum. However, when an organization has reached a certain size, paid full-time employees often become necessary as complex projects cannot be handled by volunteers alone.
The report at hand highlights the degree of professionalization which NPOs have recently gained in the development cooperation. The Institut für Mittelstandsforschung at the University of Mannheim conducted 18 in-depths interviews with experts from different NPOs in the development cooperation sector focusing on questions about organizational environment, internal expert knowledge, governance, management methods and networks.
